There are places I'll remember...

Today I wanted to list a few things that I've been thinking about since I've started working at the hospital.

.) Take time out of your day to let others know that you care, even if it's a simple as a smile or holding the door.
.)  Don't be afraid of illness and don't stare at people who are obviously sick.  They know there's something wrong with them, and most likely already feel like freaks.  Staring is just going to make it worse.
.)  Cancer is not contagious.  I remember when I was completely terrified of Cancer, but it's nothing to be afraid of.  Nobody asks for Cancer, but they are made stronger by it.
.) Take time to say "please" and "thank you."  Write thank you cards and send notes to let people know that you appreciate them.  I know that I tend to go a little bit overboard, but it is one of my pet peeves.
.) Don't be afraid to ask for help.  People are not mind-readers.
.) Don't be afraid to speak up.  Ask questions, let others know when you are in over your head.
.)  Always do the right thing.  You know what it is.  It's not always easy, but it makes you a better person.
.)  Use your turn signals.  No need to elaborate here.
.)  Be a considerate driver, see #8.
.) Try to read for 10 minutes a day - it gives you something to talk about.
.) Keep all hands, feet and other objects to yourself.  Pretty self-explanatory, if you ask me.
.)  Let people know when they've done a good job.  There are a lot of people who work their tushes off and are never told that they went above and beyond.
.) Listen to your heart.
.)  Appreciate the small things in life, whether it's a dog in the car next to you or a baby in a carrier.
.)  Take time for yourself, take bubble baths.  If you don't take time for yourself you may just go insane.
.) Take care of you.  If you don't, how can you expect others to take care of you?
.) Have a glass of wine with dinner or a cocktail.  Just be smart about it.
.)  Chocolate makes almost everything better.
.)  Watch cheesy movies.  You're guaranteed a smile.
.) Learn from your mistakes.
.) Laugh at yourself.  We all do stupid things and humiliate ourselves.
.) Know that you are not alone.  You may not know it, but there is always somebody who cares.
.) Don't hurt animals.  They lower your blood pressure and love you even when you're having a bad day, not to mention that they're completely innocent.
.) Clean up after your dog - if they poop in somebody's yard (or on the concrete) PICK IT UP.  Nobody wants to clean up poop that doesn't belong to them.  (Just venting, sorry.)
.) Bake cookies from scratch. Yummy in my tummy!
.) Don't take shortcuts.
.) Take time out to have a home-cooked meal, and that doesn't mean a meal out of a box.
.) Take out your trash.  Don't set it outside - put it where it belongs, like in a garbage can. (Or trash compactor.)
.) Respect cars belonging to other people.  Don't park on the damn line, if that's the only way you can fit in the space your car is TOO BIG.  Be careful when opening your doors, put the cart in the cart return.
.) Write things down, you never know when you will look back on a moment that is special.  And, right now, you probably don't know that it will be something you look back on.  Make your own memories.
